How do You Start the Day?

Sunrise or sunset? Yes, I am a morning person and sunrise sets my day, my energy, my mood. A beautiful sunset can also calm and help put closure to the day. How you start your day can make a difference through out the whole day, so start it right!

"Keep looking up, is the secret of life" Charlie Brown

There is something truly amazing even magical about a sunrise in the Winter with snow on the ground. Winter can be dark, grey and dreary. The snowfall while it means work later and can alter your day. Right before the sun peaks on a semi clear or clear morning and there is a blanket of white across the ground, the sky reacts in an amazing way.

Water and ice already are magical with creating a prism and the light that creates rainbows. White light is composed of all the visible colors in the electromagnetic spectrum, a fact that can be easily proven through the use of a prism. As light passes through a prism, it is bent, or refracted, by the angles and plane faces of the prism and each wavelength of light is refracted by a slightly different amount. Violet has the highest frequency and is refracted the most. Red has the lowest frequency and is refracted the least. Because each color is refracted differently, each bends at a different angle, resulting in a fanning out and separation of white light into the colors of the spectrum.

Water droplets in the air can act in a manner similar to that of a prism, separating the colors of sunlight to produce a spectrum known as a rainbow. To be able to see a rainbow, you must be standing with the sun behind you. The sunlight shines into the water droplets in the air, bending as it moves from the air into the water, reflecting off the sides the drops, and bending again as it exits the drops. As a result, all of the colors in the white light of the sun separate into the individual bands of color characteristic of a rainbow.

This rainbow effect that nature creates can be the stunning element stretching across the sky in front of you or simple colors that are refracted by the frozen ground that can illuminate a single color or rainbow of colors into the sunrise or sunset. Not all mornings will you capture the glimpse of colors, it is a perfection and timing of light, clouds, temperature and where they are all positioned as the sun rises. The other morning the colors peeked out for a brief few seconds and 30 minutes earlier than sunrise. Today as the sun rose, there were enough dark clouds to cover the light refraction and the sky simply and slowly illuminated without additional colors. The moments of sunrise are always different and always those moments to set aside in a meditation to let the day start.

"One small positive thought in the morning can change your whole day" Dalia Lama

If every morning you get up with a buzz of the alarm, rush to the coffee pot and into the shower or zip around to hussle and bussle, you are missing something amazing right outside the window. Yes, there is always tomorrow, but if you take the time each day and make it part of the routine, it can bring on a wonderful effect to start each day a little better. Today is "National Make your Dreams Come True", no better time than right now to make it happen.
