Paws, Prints and Poop
Rain, rain, and more rain. Yes when it rains it pours. When it pours, things get wet. Some days when the sky is dark and misty grey, the air is damp and chills to the bone; it can be difficult to find inspiration to go outdoors for adventure.

Trails are extremely muddy, even the best trek on boots can slip on the rocks. When the feet don't slip, the rocks still move and slip out from under. Wear the right gear, that is a no-brainer. But, rainpants tend to funnel the drops down the legs and build up on the footwear, so give them an extra spray of waterproofing when they are sitting on the bench for a couple days. Even still, mother nature can rain the cats and dogs, howl her winds and challenge your soul and strength- "do I really want to go out in this today?"
This is a perfect time to research the next adventure inside by a warm fire with a cup of cocoa. Scout out trail books, maps and the internet for new paths your boots have not touched. It is also a great time to double check the gear. Replace batteries, fresh water and energy bars. Don't forget the first aid kit. It is a great time to take a class! Educate and explore to prepare yourself in the future.
If you still find the draw and desire for fresh air and the trails just sound too muddy. There are plenty of Forest roads closed for winter travel. Travel for vehicles, but foot traffic is optional. Pack your snow shoes, winter gear, trekking poles and find yourself alone with nature. Untouched roads are great places to search for wildlife signs. Tracks in the snow or mud, scratch marks and even......yes poop. All the signs untouched by other traffic in the natural relm. Do it with a little caution and common sense. While the bears should be sleeping, some choose to stay up if they are not bearing new babies and cougars are drawn to lower elevations. Wildlife is drawn to the peace and quiet just like you. Those closed roads are awesome serene areas, be alone with the wild. So, remember to let someone know where you are going, be aware of your surroundings incase you cross paths with wildlife, better yet, invite a friend and go together to share the adventure.

I love the quiet spaces in nature. " The woman who follows the crowd, usually goes further into the crowd. The woman who walks alone is likely to find herself in places no one has ever been before. " Albert Einstein
So if you walk into places no one has been before, be sure to prepare, go safe and come home.
