Nature's Cycles

Nature is the most powerful force on Earth. We observe and try to full fill a need by by harnessing the natural rhythms to enhance our own lives. So, we start with our own cycles of sleeping and eating. Maybe try to rise in the morning with the sun, yet we stay awake with the help of electricity at night. Summer it is easier to stay up until it is dark.

We create harmony in our lives with outdoor spaces to enjoy nature in our home setting. If you are like me, I have more windows than wall space to constantly view nature from every room in my home. Maybe also leave windows open for the sounds of wind, rain, birds and creeks. We breathe in the plants and find peace in observing the stars, moon and sunset.

So naturally as the seasons change, our lives change with it. Fall is approaching quickly, the rains are more frequent and colder. The dampness of Autumn soaks to the bone so we enjoy the warmth indoors of a fire. The days are darker with heavy cloud cover, but the sparkling lights hung inside add a comfort twinkle to warm. Not only are leaves changing and the weather, the animals notice this change and adapt. For the bear and squirrels it is harvesting food for winter. The elk and deer are in rut, looking to mate and plant the seed that will grow all winter and shed new life again next spring.

"October is the fallen leaf, but it is also a wider horizon more clearly seen. It is the distant hills once more in sight, and the enduring constellations above them once again." — Hal Bourland

There is still the desire to be outside with nature. For some it is hunting season and others still throw on hiking boots and head up a trail. Even in the yard, we make changes in the garden, finish a harvest, clean up the flower beds and prepare our yard for upcoming winter months as plants die back and sap retreats to the roots for hibernation.

As we venture outdoors, dress accordingly, layer, insulate, and wear protective wear to clothing to shelter out the rain. A short time in the yard or trek up a hillside, we have to be prepared to keep our body temperature maintained to its natural level. Be aware of your surroundings, always, the ground is softer and rocks are slippery. It is easy to roll an ankle, stumble and tumble down a muddy hillside and break a bone or two. Nature is beautiful with every seasonal change, but always respect the change and prepare with it. Work with the natural forces and empower your soul. The days are shorter, check the batteries in the pack flashlight, headlamp and re-check the pack for 10 essential supplies in case you are caught out in the elements and need to shelter in place a night. When going on a day hike, you still have to plan like you are gone over night. Fall is here, prepare for the change and embrace it.

"But when fall comes, kicking summer out on its treacherous ass as it always does one day sometime after the midpoint of September, it stays awhile like an old friend that you have missed. It settles in the way an old friend will settle into your favorite chair and take out his pipe and light it and then fill the afternoon with stories of places he has been and things he has done since last he saw you.” — Stephen King
